We are a small school composed of serious students. We invite anyone to join us and we look forward to sharing this very old and rare martial art with anyone who is serious about learning its ways.
JKO Iowa
JKO University of Iowa Classes are open to everyone, even non students.
The cost is $60 a semester.
JKO Iowa (日本空手道会アイオワ) meets Tuesdays and Thursdays in the University of Iowa Field House Room S511 at 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
During this time we practice Shito-Ryu Karate-Do (糸東流 空手道).
There are several venues, Kihon (基本 - Basic Techniques), Kata (型 - Traditional Forms), Kumite (組手 - Sparring), and Goshin Jutsu (護身術 - Self Defense).
The training varies, depending on the level of the student, the group of students, etc.
As you progress through the system, content changes based on skill and ability level.
We also have a Kobudo/Iaido (古武道/居合道) Saturday class at 10 a.m. Kobudo (古武道) is the training of old traditional weaponry. Iaido (居合道) is the training of Japanese style swords.
Please feel free to come watch and or train with us.
If you do attend regularly you must purchase your own gear. Gear includes a Karate uniform called a Gi, and any Kumite/sparring gear you feel you might need.
If you decide to practice Iaido or Kobudo, the club has some gear you may use; however, it is preferred that you purchase your own.
JKO Rank and Certifications is available if you choose. There are fees associated with Certification.
